Circulation Policies

General Circulation Books
:

Three week checkout period. This checkout period is shortened at the end of each term. All books are checked in and out on the computer at the circulation desk. In order to get books back to the library so they are available to others, the library charges fines for those that are overdue. Overdue fines are $.20 per day excluding days when the library is closed ($.25 per day after end of semester due date).

Reserve Materials:

In order to make certain materials available to all members of a class, instructors place materials on reserve behind the circulation desk. This insures that all students have equal access to the needed materials. Reserves may be checked out on the computer for a two hour period. Some reserves are only for in library use while others may be checked out for overnight during the last 30 minutes that the library is open for the day. In this case they are due back in the library by 8:30 a.m. the following day. A fine of $1.00 per hour (or fraction of an hour) will be charged for reserve materials not returned on time while $2.00 per day will be charged for multi-day reserves that are returned late.

Christian Service Resources:

All child evangelism materials may be checked for a 1 week checkout period.

Video Tapes and Audio Tapes

1 week checkout period.

Non-Circulating Materials:

Reference books, periodicals, and vertical file materials. A photocopier and microform reader/printer is available for duplicating materials in compliance with copyright restrictions. Copies cannot be charged.

Renewals:

Material may be renewed if all fines are paid and no one else has reserved the material.

Lost Materials:

The borrower assumes full responsibility for materials checked out with his card. A lost item should be reported immediately. Overdue fines stop when a student reports the lost material. A processing fee of $3.00 is charged for each lost item in addition to the replacement purchase price. If a card is lost, a new one must be obtained.
Library Resources

Library Resources

Reference Collection and Services:

Reference materials include general and specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, almanacs, atlases, bibliographies, indexes, and the like. These materials are shelved near the main entrance and can be identified by an "R" over the classification number. A trained staff member, who can provide assistance in locating and using library materials and equipment, staffs the Circulation/Reference desk.

General Circulation Books:

These books are shelved in the rear of the library. All cataloged materials are classified by the Dewey Decimal Classification System. Library of Congress subject headings are assigned to each item.

Library Office Books:

A special collection of rare books are shelved in the librarian's office. These are designated by a "Lib. Off." above the call number.

Pamphlets:

Pamphlets, small booklets under 90 pages, are located in boxes on the designed pamphlet shelves along the east wall of the library. These are cataloged and can be identified by a "P" over the classification number.

Vertical File Materials:

Leaflets, clippings, maps, etc. are filed in the filing cabinets along the west wall of the library.

Christian Service Resources:

Child evangelism materials, hanging on special racks in the back of the library, are classified in three divisions--stories (ST), songs (SO), and Bible verses (V). Stories and songs are in alphabetical order by title; Bible verses alphabetically by the book of the Bible.

Curriculum Materials:

Located along the northwest wall, this resource consists of teacher's editions of textbooks & workbooks and other resources for K-12 teachers and education majors.

Periodicals and Indexes:

The HSBC Library receives over 100 periodicals. Current paper issues are on display while paper back files are located on shelves in the northeast area of the library. A significant number of back files are also available on microfiche. A Minolta 605Z Reader/Printer allows for viewing and printing of microfiche. Periodical indexes such as Christian Periodical Index and Religion Index One: Periodicals provide indexing to articles in magazines by author and subject. Several full-text periodical databases are available online electronically. Current newspapers such as the Stuart News and Palm Beach Post are available on the newspaper rack.

Internet Resources:

Filtered Internet access is available in the library. This allows for on-line searching of the vast World Wide Web internet resources, the Martin County Library System, and a host of additional resources. E-mail use is also available.

Additional Computer Resources:

Catalog Plus serves as the electronic library catalog. All 33,500 volumes in the HSBC Library can be accessed by author, title, and keyword. Books and media items added since 1991 can be searched by subject. Microsoft Office including Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint, is also provided on library computers for student use.

Audio-Visual Materials:

Filmstrips, film loops, slide sets, video cassettes, audio cassettes, kits, records, transparences, etc., are available in the library along with viewing and listening equipment.

Area Libraries:

HSBC students with Student ID cards are granted checkout privileges at the Martin County Public Library in Hobe Sound, in Stuart, and in other branch libraries.

Inter-Library Loan:

If materials needed for research are not available in the HSBC Library or area libraries you may wish to inquire about inter-library loan. The time span between request and receipt is usually 2-3 weeks and sometimes longer so plan ahead if the material is needed by a certain time.

Copiers:

In addition to the Microfiche Reader/Printer, the library has a photocopy machine. Copies can be made on either machine for 10 cents per copy.
